Heading up to her room, Summer didn’t quite know what to think as far as Holden was concerned. The glint in his eyes pleased her. Perhaps a little too much. It was a relief Jonas and many of the town’s people didn’t blame her for Paul’s death, but she was still scared out of her wits. Brent meant what he said and he’d be coming for her. Maybe she should have told Holden but she was half afraid that Holden would go after Brent and get hurt.

She quickly put her nightgown on and shut off the light. She dragged the wooden chair to the window that overlooked the front of the house. Drawing the heavy curtain aside, she stared out into the darkness watching, waiting, and worrying.

She never felt the way she felt about Holden before. He was in her heart and it was going to hurt when it was all over. Would it be better to stay guarded with him or would she regret never making love with him? He made her whole body sing and she desperately wanted to just wrap her whole self around him. He’d awakened a whole side of her she wasn’t familiar with. Of course she’d had sex before but she instinctively knew that it would be so different with Holden. Her nipples tightened and she crossed her arms over them, her whole being wistful.

Sleep didn’t even enter her mind as she stared out the window. Brent was someone she thought she knew, but he had fooled her. She’d thought they shared a mutual affection when they broke up. There were no hard feelings, their schedules didn’t mesh. But, he used her and like a fool, she didn’t even know.

How could she not have seen the violence in him? There must have been some signs that she missed. What the signs were, she had no idea. He mentioned he’d been interrupted, by whom? Did he plan to rape her or was murder in his plans too? Chills racked her body.

She couldn’t sit still any longer, so she paced back and forth, mentally kicking herself for being so stupid. Although she appreciated that the O’Learys wanted to protect her, they hadn’t seen the carnage Brent left. Paul’s murder had been particularly brutal. Sheriff Brown made sure she saw it up close before she was taken to the hospital. What an ass.

A knock on her door, staunched her thoughts. Opening it, there stood Holden, bare-chested. Her mouth dropped open as she stared. She’d never seen so many well developed muscles on a man before. His shoulders seemed to take up the whole width of the doorframe. A light sprinkling of dark hair covered his chest tapering down to a fine line that disappeared under his jeans. Realizing she was staring, she immediately glanced up. Her face grew warm at his knowing grin. His damn, sexy grin of his was going to get her in trouble.

“I saw your shadow walking back and forth under the door.
